Lloyd Nicholson – Director/Artistic Director

Lloyd served under Ed Harrington on a dozen RCMT shows before being named Artistic Director 3 years ago. He directed last season’s song-and-dance extravaganza 42nd Street, the high-flying Peter Pan and 2005’s hit The Music Man, which made the Province Newspaper’s annual top 10 list. He has also directed Anne of Green Gables, Kiss Me Kate, Annie and South Pacific for TUTS. Lloyd has been music director and conductor on shows across Canada, including Gypsy (Theatre Calgary), West Side Story and Cabaret (Neptune Theatre, Halifax) and productions spanning more than 20 years at the Vancouver Playhouse, among them Oliver!, A Little Night Music, Fiddler on the Roof and A Chorus Line. His most recent of many shows at the Arts Club was last summer’s long-running success, Suds. Varied skills earned him a week on a film set with Debbie Reynolds (Connie and Carla) and 2 days on set (playing accordion!) with Jon Voight in The 5 People You Meet in Heaven. He even had a close encounter with Carol Lawrence and Larry Kert, the original Broadway Maria and Tony, as contractor for their reunion tour ‘Carol and Larry Together Again’. As resident musical director at Studio 58, he has guided students through shows ranging from She Loves Me, Cabaret , Hair, Pal Joey, Trelawney and The Boyfriend to last season’s acclaimed Guys and Dolls for which he received an Ovation Award. Lloyd holds a degree in theatre from the U. of Alberta and in his graduating year, was awarded the Salter Memorial Prize in Renaissance Literature for a paper he wrote on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet , the source of tonight’s story. Honors he has since received include a Jessie Award and the Ovation Award for Lifetime Achievement.
