The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra and Royal City Musical Theatre
Kismet in Concert Style.
This is the first time these incredible organizations have collaborated on a presentation (and hopefully not the last), and it’s sure to be magical.
Following fast on the heels of Royal City Musical Theatre’s smash production of Singin’ In The Rain comes Kismet in Concert Style. Continuing the celebration of its 30th Anniversary, RCMT joins with the New Westminster Symphony in this one time only production of the Tony Award winning Best Musical of 1954, Kismet, on this its 65th Anniversary. Based on the melodic melodies of famed Russian Composer Alexander Borodin it produced such standards as Stranger in Paradise, Baubles, Bangles and Beads and This Is My Beloved that were later recorded as popular hits for artists such as Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee.
Kismet takes place during the time of Aladdin and Sinbad and follows the exploits of a destitute beggar known as The Poet, over the course of one magical day during which he has to rely on his wits and Kismet – or Fate as we know it – to make his fortune, save his hand and even his head from being lopped off, romance the evil Wazir’s wife, and see his lovely daughter Marsinah married off to the handsome Caliph. All in a day’s work and done with a wry sense of humour. RCMT Artistic Director Valerie Easton has assembled a stellar cast of performers that will bring this Broadway classic to life on the stage of the Massey, supported by a symphony orchestra of nearly 40 musicians under the direction of NWSO Conductor Jin Zhang.
This is the first time that the two pre-eminent, resident companies of the Massey Theatre have collaborated on a project and it promises to be memorable, so bring your magic carpet with you and prepare to take a ride to an exotic setting; that you won’t soon forget on Sunday, June 2nd, at 2:00PM at the Massey Theatre.
Admission by donation at the door.
